Context
The CHAPS theatre tour is the second stage of a two year project which followed the Gallery tour in 2006. CHAPS was designed to build the company's profile and to develop the artistic vision of the company through national touring and the creation of new dance works. Running alongside the tour was a comprehensive education programme, set up to target children who don't normally have the opportunity to participate in high quality dance activity. These education programmes were held across the UK and in particular, within rural locations.
The theatre tour represents an opportunity for Ascendance Rep to build on its existing reputation for high quality work. Artistically, it allows the company to commission a challenging new piece and further develop existing repertory.
Most importantly, the theatre setting allows a larger number of people to experience the work. Those who watched Ascendance Rep in a gallery – many of whom were new to the art form – will be invited into a theatre setting. In addition, the new setting will provide the capacity to target and accommodate more regular dance attendees. Ascendance Rep will continue its commitment to supporting new choreographers and dancers, providing opportunities for regional and national graduates by extending the audition process to include Continuing Professional Development elements for those taking part.
